Tasting notes

Bright, medium ruby. The nose offers red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry with hints of sweet spice and forest floor. The palate is elegant and supple, with fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity and a savoury, gently earthy finish.

About this wine

Castello della Sala is the medieval castle estate of the Antinori family in Umbria, a few kilometres from Orvieto. Its vineyards, planted on hillside clay and limestone soils rich in marine fossils, are best known for white wines, but the cool, well-ventilated slopes have also proved well suited to Pinot Noir.

This Pinot Nero is made entirely from the variety and matures in French oak before bottling, aiming for finesse and aromatic purity rather than power.

The 2016 vintage now shows a mature, layered character: an unusual and elegant expression of Pinot Noir from central Italy.
