Tasting notes

Garnet red with brick reflections. Black cherry leads the nose, joined by cocoa, walnut, tar and dried flowers in the way mature Nebbiolo tends to. The palate is medium to full, the tannins dense but finely drawn, and the texture is silky; it closes juicy and mineral, with length rather than weight.

About this wine

Paolo Manzone and his wife Luisella run their family winery in the Meriame cru at Serralunga d'Alba, a small natural amphitheatre set between Baudana and Lazzarito. The vineyards are worked by hand and without chemical treatments, and the estate belongs to The Green Experience, Piedmont's sustainability programme.

San Giuliano is their Barbaresco, from a cru site at Neive that they have bottled since the 2008 vintage. The Nebbiolo ferments in stainless steel and then spends two years in large 15-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks, a slow and undemonstrative ageing that leaves the fruit and the site in the foreground.
