Tasting notes

Garnet red, lightening at the rim. The nose is classically Serralunga: dried rose and violet over sour cherry, then tar, liquorice root, forest floor and a mushroomy note. The palate is firm and upright, the tannins fine but insistent, with bright acidity holding a long, savoury, faintly salty finish.

About this wine

The Manzone winery and the family house stand inside the Meriame cru itself, at Serralunga d'Alba: a small natural amphitheatre between the celebrated sites of Baudana and Lazzarito. Paolo and his wife Luisella work the vineyards by hand and without chemical treatments, and the estate belongs to The Green Experience sustainability programme.

Barolo Meriame takes its name from that vineyard, whose south and south-west slopes face Castiglione Falletto. It is Nebbiolo made in the traditional Serralunga mould, firm and slow to open, and it is built to develop in bottle over many years. Decanting before serving is worth the trouble.
