Tasting notes

Pale, luminous ruby. The nose opens slowly: wild strawberry, dried rose, orange zest, incense and a deep stony, volcanic minerality. On the palate it is weightless yet profound, with silky, finely etched tannins, vibrant acidity and an extraordinarily long, ethereal finish. Decant for at least two hours or cellar for a decade.

About this wine

Tenuta delle Terre Nere is the estate of Marco de Grazia in Contrada Calderara, Randazzo, on the northern slope of Mount Etna. Prephylloxera, also known as La Vigna di Don Peppino, comes from a 0.8-hectare parcel in Calderara planted with ungrafted vines more than 140 years old, set in the ground before phylloxera reached Etna in 1881.

The estate has vinified this plot separately since the 2006 vintage. The 100% Nerello Mascalese ages for 14 months in French oak barriques and tonneaux, of which only 10% are new, so the wood never speaks louder than the vineyard.

It is a shy wine that demands patience and decanting, with measured elegance, gentle authority and a graceful refinement that few reds in Italy can match. 14.5% alcohol.
