Tasting notes

Ruby red. The nose is concentrated and long, with cinnamon, black pepper, tobacco, forest floor and red fruit. The palate is deep and layered, with elegant tannins, volcanic freshness and a long, spicy finish. Notes of dried herbs, liquorice and volcanic minerality add complexity.

About this wine

"Signum Aetnae" is the rarest wine of the Sicilian winery Firriato. It comes from about two hectares of ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines in the Verzella district on the northern slope of Etna, at around 650 metres, on the Cavanera Etnea estate.

The vines, Nerello Mascalese with old local varieties, were planted in the second half of the 19th century; the University of Palermo puts their average age at over 150 years. The wine ages in French oak tonneaux and barriques.

Each bottle comes in a screen-printed wooden case with a parchment certifying the age of the vines.
