Tasting notes

Deep garnet, slow to lighten. Black cherry, dried plum and liquorice lead, with tar, sweet spice, tobacco and a damp earthy note. The palate is broad and muscular, its tannin denser and more coating than in the estate's other crus, carried by firm acidity. The finish is very long and savoury, closing on dark fruit, menthol and iron.

About this wine

Vignolo is a small parcel in Castiglione Falletto that Cavallotto acquired in the 1990s, set apart from the family's Bricco Boschis hill and planted on soils with a higher proportion of clay. It is bottled only as a Riserva and only in the better years.

Fermentation is spontaneous and long, and the wine then rests for several years in large Slavonian oak botti before further bottle age in the cellar. The clay gives a broader, darker Barolo than San Giuseppe, with the same traditional handling.

A structured, slow-developing Riserva for the cellar.
