Tasting notes

Dark ruby. Aromas of blackberry, dried plum, black pepper and a hint of leather. Medium-full body with a solid tannic frame, fresh acidity and a savoury, peppery finish.

About this wine

Mavrud is the most Bulgarian of all grapes: late-ripening, dark and tannic, and almost never found outside the country. This bottle comes from Maryan, a winery in the cool hills of the Elena Balkan.

The 2019 has softened enough to drink now, with blackberry, dried plum, black pepper and a hint of leather on a solid tannic frame. An authentic, full-flavoured red with a strong sense of place.

Serve at 16–18 °C with lamb, grilled meat or spiced red-meat dishes.
