Tasting notes

Deep garnet red. Dark forest fruit and violet dominate the nose, with a touch of cocoa and sweet spice from the barrique. The palate is full-bodied, with the velvety tannins good Lagrein develops after time in wood, and a long finish carrying a light note of vanilla.

About this wine

Castelfeder is a South Tyrolean family winery founded in 1969 by Alfons Giovanett and run by the third generation of the family. This Lagrein comes from the single vineyard Vill Carnaid near Salorno, where alluvial soils sit on dolomite rock.

Lagrein is the dark, firmly tannic native red of the Bolzano basin, and here it is picked by hand and fermented about ten days in stainless steel before twelve months in new and used barriques. The oak rounds the variety's naturally severe tannins without covering its dark-fruited character.
