Tasting notes

Ruby red, bright rather than deep. The nose opens on red forest fruit, raspberry and wild strawberry, with a light touch of spice from the barrique. The palate is elegant and well structured, acidity balanced against fine tannins, and the finish is clean and savoury rather than sweet.

About this wine

Castelfeder is a South Tyrolean family winery founded in 1969, and Pinot Nero is its principal red variety. Buchholz is a steep single vineyard near Salorno on the cooler eastern side of the valley, between 440 and 500 metres, sitting on the Trodena fault line where dolomitic limestone meets porphyry.

That mix of cool exposure and broken geology suits a grape that turns coarse in warmth. The fruit is hand-picked and macerated for ten to fourteen days in stainless steel, then the wine spends twelve months in barrique and at least three further months in bottle.
